First Published on 10 November 2021 in Facebook Alhamdulillah.... Avicenna Farm received delivery on another 300 sheep last Friday (5 November 2021). This makes it a total of 1400 sheep that are now living on our farm. Our man in the thick of things, Nasser Jamaludin drove out to the grazing fields yesterday (8 November 2021) to check on the sheep and is happy to report that all the sheep are doing well and in good health.

First Published on 1 November 2021 in Facebook Avicenna Farm sits on 800+ acres of fertile land with fertile pastures for grazing livestock all year round. Water is also in abundance all over the farm from ground water located just 10 meters underground. Avicenna Farm is currently home for almost 1000 ewes and lambs, and its size is big enough for our flock of sheep. There is no one sheep stocking rate per acre which is considered ideal for all climates and pasture conditions. A good rule of thumb is 10 ewes and 15 lambs per acre of pasture. In fact, if the pasture is properly managed and fertilized, a 30 acres farm should be sufficient for a flock of 100 ewes and 150 lambs, according to Purdue University, a university specializing In agricultural studies, among other fields. "It is a labour-intensive task and often delayed by rainy weather. Alhamdulillah, we have completed these tasks with a substantial portion of our sheep", said Mohd Nasser Jamaludin, who manages Avicenna Farm. Tagging is done by clipping a rubber tag embedded with an RFID chip on the ear lobe of the sheep. This serves as a visual aid and ensures traceability of the sheep. First Published on 30 October 2021 in Facebook Avicenna Farm is undertaking a feasibility study on cattle farming as part of our growth plan in livestock farming. We have invested in a small herd of Jersey cow calfs for this effort. Jersey cows are a relatively small breed of dairy cattle used primarily for milk production.

The PIC is only issued to owners of properties that have livestock living and grazing on the land. PICs are part of a traceability system which ultimately provide confidence to consumers and people who are interested to know more about the property.

HalalXpert held a webinar on 14 October 2021 to share our Sheep Farming and Breeding Investment Program. The webinar was hosted by Islamic Events at their studio and drew in about 30 participants. Seen here in the video is Mr Mohd Nasser, who is comforting one that seems too tired to even leave the holding paddock after disembarking from the truck. Alhamdulillah, after a short period of rest, she was well enough to join the rest of the flock in the grazing fields.

Avicenna is the Latinized name of Ibn Sina. His formal Arabic name was Abu Ali al-Husayn bin Abdullah ibn al-Hasan bin Ali bin Sina al-Balkhi al-Bukhari. He was regarded as one of the most significant physicians, astronomers, thinkers and writers of the Islamic Golden Age. He is also regarded as the father of early modern medicine.

First Published on 9 October in Facebook One major concern for any livestock farmer is the availability of water for the animals under their care. And that too has been a concern for us when we embarked on our enterprise into sheep farming and breeding. Alhamdulillah, our farm is blessed with an abundant supply of ground water, located some 10 metres underground. Using boring tools and a water pump, we are able to easily extract the ground water for our sheep. And we will be doing this across the 773 acres of our farm. The water will also prove to be useful for the cultivation of natural feed for the sheep, to supplement the already abundant high quality grass that is growing in the fields. The other natural feed that we will cultivate is to provide variety in the sheep's diet and also to supplement their dietary needs, especially when the ewes (female sheep) have given birth and are milking their lambs. The electronic tag will ensure that there is lifetime traceability for our sheep, which is deemed important for biosecurity, food safety and also helps to protect the livestock industry in Australia. Our effort is also in line with the decision of the government of the State of Victoria to fully implement electronic tagging by 1 January 2022. The electronic tagging system will replace the current normal colour-coded tags, which are clipped to the sheep's ear. The new electronic tags will have chips embedded in the tags, and each chip will contain data relating to the sheep, including information such as the Property Identification Code (PIC). While most sheep farmers make use of sheep dogs to manage and protect their flock, we will be investing in a pack of Alpacas to protect our sheep. The normally meek Alpaca can be a great protector for our sheep from predators. A single Alpaca can protect 50-60 sheep from foxes as well as other pest and rodents that may come into our farm. A pair of Alpacas can effectively protect a large flock by alerting the flock, intimidating threats, kicking, spitting, and chasing predators. Some alpacas have been known to trample foxes to death. The same can be said about the threat of snakes. Alpacas protect the sheep by adopting them as part of their herd. They protect the sheep and lambs as they would their own herd of Alpacas. Going into a new enterprise is always filled with many challenges, and it has been the case for us when we started our investment program for sheep farming and breeding, especially since we embarked on our enterprise in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. But we always hold firm to the belief that "Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear…” (2:286) and that through hard work and effort and always remembering Allah, we will be able to overcome the challenges.
